Thailand's innovative approach to elderly welfare

16.04.2024

Thailand is taking revolutionary measures to combat the threat of social isolation among its elderly population by introducing the innovative concept of “time banks”. The initiative was announced during the Songkran holiday, when traditionally many Thais return home to spend time with family. Despite the apparent warmth of this tradition, it highlights a deeper problem: many older people are left alone for much of the year.

Research from Mahidol University has revealed a worrying trend: More and more elderly people in Thailand are living isolated from their families, in what scientists call a “loneliness epidemic.” This phenomenon is contrary to traditional Thai culture, where several generations usually live under one roof.

In response to this problem, Thai authorities are developing not only infrastructure and facilities for the elderly, but also launching various social programs such as “time banks”. These “banks” allow people to exchange services where time becomes a value rather than money. One person's hour of work can be exchanged for another's hour of service, creating a system of mutual aid and strengthening social ties.

In this way, time banks not only provide older people with the support and assistance they need, but also restore the sense of community and belonging that is so important to maintaining the spirit and traditions of Thailand.
