Increased control on Phuket roads during Songkran holiday

10.04.2024

On April 11, a week of increased traffic control will begin on the island of Phuket, which is carried out in all provinces of Thailand during the Songkran celebration. The Governor of Phuket, Sophon Souvannarath, conducted a check of forces before the start of this traditional action.

As part of the control, there will be 11 main road control posts and 19 additional checkpoints on the island. In addition, personnel from relevant departments and district authorities will be stationed at three piers: Ratsada Pier, Chalong Pier and Ao Po Pier.

Roadside checks will not only be conducted to verify driver's licenses, but will also require mandatory breathalyzer testing. At the April 9 ceremony, the governor emphasized that drunk driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents.

Phuket recorded a record number of road safety incidents in the first quarter. Between January and March, 52 people were killed in road accidents, corresponding to an average weekly death rate of four. The most dangerous period, judging by the number of violations, occurs from 22:00 to 7:00 am.
